Not all oils are the same

Black seed oils can vary a lot in taste, colour and quality. Knowing what to look for on the label makes it much easier to choose an oil you'll enjoy.

  • Cold-pressed. Look for oil pressed without added heat or chemical solvents, which keeps its natural character.
  • 100% black seed oil. Check the ingredients list — it should say Nigella sativa seed oil and nothing else.
  • Dark glass. Amber or dark glass protects the oil from light; clear plastic doesn't.
  • Clear origin and dates. A good producer tells you where the seeds come from and when to use the oil by.

Trust your senses

A good black seed oil has a rich amber-brown colour, a warm, peppery aroma and a bold flavour with a gentle bitter finish. It should taste clean — never rancid or flat.

“If a label can't tell you how it was pressed or where it came from, that tells you something too.”
