Small ways to make it part of your day
Black seed oil has a bold, peppery flavour with a gentle bitterness — a little goes a long way. The easiest way to enjoy it is to fold it into things you already do every day. Here are five of our favourites.
- With honey in the morning. Stir half a teaspoon into a spoonful of raw honey for a sweet-and-spicy start to the day.
- As a finishing drizzle. A few drops over hummus, labneh or roasted vegetables add depth and a lovely dark sheen.
- In salad dressings. Whisk a little into olive oil, lemon juice and a pinch of salt for a dressing with real character.
- Over warm bread. Mix with olive oil and za'atar for dipping — simple, and very hard to stop.
- Into yoghurt or smoothies. Its flavour softens beautifully with creamy, fruity flavours.
Start small, keep it fresh
Because the flavour is strong, start with a few drops and build up to what you enjoy. Black seed oil is best used as a finishing oil rather than for high-heat cooking, which can dull its character. Keep the bottle closed and away from light between uses.
“I started with a few drops over my morning eggs. Now I can't imagine breakfast without it.”
