Light, heat and air
Like any natural, unrefined oil, black seed oil is sensitive to its surroundings. Light, heat and air are what cause oils to lose their freshness over time — so good storage is mostly about keeping those three away.
- Keep it dark. Store the bottle in a cupboard, away from sunny windowsills. Our amber glass helps, but a dark spot is even better.
- Keep it cool. Avoid spots near the stove, oven or other heat sources.
- Keep it closed. Replace the cap straight after use to limit contact with air.
- Use a clean spoon. Never let water or food get into the bottle.
How to tell it's fresh
Fresh black seed oil smells warm, peppery and slightly herbal, with a deep amber colour. If an oil smells sharp, stale or like old paint, it's past its best. Always check the best-before date on the label.
“Treat it like a good olive oil — somewhere cool and dark, cap on, and it'll reward you.”
